The Correct Method of Performing Tayammum According to the Qur’an

Tayammum is a form of purification allowed in Islam when water is not available or when its use may cause harm. The Qur’an clearly explains the conditions and method of Tayammum, showing the ease and mercy of Islamic law.

Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an:

“But if you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes from relieving himself, or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and your hands with it.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:6)

This verse clearly establishes both the permission and the method of Tayammum.

Steps of Tayammum According to the Qur’an

  1. Using Clean Earth
The Qur’an commands the use of clean earth (pure dust or soil). This includes anything natural from the earth that is clean.
  2. Wiping the Face
After touching the clean earth, the face should be wiped gently.
  3. Wiping the Hands
The hands should then be wiped. The Qur’an mentions wiping the hands without specifying a detailed limit, showing simplicity and flexibility.

These steps form the complete Qur’anic method of Tayammum.

When Tayammum Is Allowed

The Qur’an permits Tayammum in situations such as:

  • When water is not available
  • When a person is ill
  • When traveling
  • When using water may cause harm

Allah mentions these situations to make worship easy and accessible for every believer.

Purpose of Tayammum

Allah explains the wisdom behind this allowance:

“Allah does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you, so that you may be grateful.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:6)

This shows that Tayammum, like Wudu, is a means of purification and a mercy from Allah.

Conclusion

According to the Qur’an, Tayammum is performed by using clean earth and wiping the face and hands when water is unavailable or harmful. This Qur’anic method ensures that no believer is deprived of prayer due to hardship.

Understanding Tayammum through the Qur’an highlights the balance, ease, and compassion built into Islamic teachings.
